By this I mean, using the recent "Cash For Clunkers" program as an example, we smashed up tons of servicable cars and replaced them in many cases with only marginally more efficient cars. End result: the energy and materials used to build and ship the new cars ends up being environmentally worse than the original clunkers (not to mention worse on the taxpayer's wallet as well). That's why I am pleased to <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/30/business/energy-environment/30led.html?th&emc=th">report </a>that the compact flourescent bulbs do, in fact, turn out to be better than the incandescent bulbs.
